J-Fest - 4 Races, 0 Throwout(s)
The J Fest Regatta saw a 36 boat turn out for a five race series that was won by Bella Rosa, followed by Bandwidth, Good Timin, Zuni Bear and Nantucket Sleighride. Race 3 was abandoned with four different boats getting bullets and 12 different boats cracking the top five in the four races that counted. Saturday was warm and sunny with shorts and halter tops in order as the fleet waited off the Berkely pier for a late light breeze to fill. Race 1 and 2 finally got off in a nice southwesterly 12-15 knots in a 3.4 flood tide running down the line that kept the starts nice and orderly. Advantage 3 escaped to win race 1 in a double sausage course with the finish line to weather of the top mark.Walloping Swede, Bella Rosa, Zuni Bear and surprising Lightwave rounded out the top five. Race 2 was in much the same conditions with the left side proving again to be favored. Good Timin came back from a 7 in race one to win race 2 followed by fleet veteran Orion, steady Bella Rosa, Wind Dance and Zuni Bear. Race 3 was top mark to club house finish. The fleet rounded the top in tight order and paraded on a sunny spinnaker reach towards the Estuary. However, a huge frieghter came inbound to split the fleet at the mouth of the Estuary that combined with extremely light winds lead to an abandonment of race 3. Sunday saw big winds 20-30 knots. Race 3 was again a double sausage windward finish that saw Nantucket Sleighride grab a bullet followed by Bandwidth, Bella Rosa, up and coming Streaker and Wind Dance. Race 5 saw the wind pick up with gusts to 30 knots. Bella Rosa followed a steady 3,4,2 by getting a bullet to seal the deal followed by Bandwidth with its second 2 (combined with two 8's to grab second overall by edgin Good Timin by 1 point), Nantucket Sleighride (steady enough for 5th overall), Good Timin (who finished 3d overall 3 points ahead of Zuni Bear) and a great race by Jose Cuervo to get a fifth. All in all, it was great racing over two days. The combination of the race seminars and new 360 rule resulted in a much more orderly race. Even with a ripping flood at the top mark, room was mostly given to boats shooting the mark, and many 360's were done by those that touched. There was only one general recall and perhaps a handful of individual over earlies. Added flavor was provided by converging with other fleets including J35s, J24s and J120s that are not normally part of the J105 race and finish tactics. Lots of thanks to EYC and Sail California for hosting. Thanks to Matt for a square line and good courses.
