2002 Big Boat Series. The weather was great and everyone was glad to be sailing. The regatta started with a touching wreath ceremony in honor of the 9/11 tragedy and ended on a glorious Sunday BayTour race. Good Timin' showed her muscle and won the 7 race Big Boat Series by posting a very consistent and impressive 1,3,1,4,7,1,2 total of 19 in a very competitive fleet of 33 boats. Good Timin' was the only boat to not take a deep score and proved her overall skill in a variety of sailing and racing conditions. Blackhawk 11,6,16,2,1,2,1 total 39 beat Nantucket Sleighride 2,4,4,5,8,11,5 total of 39 in a tie breaker followed by Zuni Bear 10,5,2,3,3,15,4 total 42 and Irrational Again 7,7,8,1,5,3,15 total of 46.

Thursday and Friday saw racing on the TI course with a finish at the StFYC race deck. The fleet raced the classic double sausage courses in 15 to 25 knots of wind against building flood tides. Most boats went for tide relief in the Cone of Alcatraz while a few brave souls tried (unsuccessfully) to go up the City Front. Thursday finsihes saw both upwind and downwind finishes at the StFYC race deck which was quite nice viewing, but nerve wracking finishing. On top of everything else, the Ellison yacht Ronin decided to watch just east of the breakwater and made a 75 yard city front lane into a 25 yard lance for both hard charging Farr 40s and short tacking J105s! On Friday, the race committe got everyone finsihing in the same direction.

Saturday started with a long up down course followed by a TI to City Front race deck finish. The fleet again went up the cone (all of them) but a few tried leaving Alcatraz to port....which did not really work out. The winds picked up and several boats found an advantage working the shore in the second race. Sunday was the classic bay tour race from temporaries near TI, Yellow Bluff, A/B Race Deck, TI, Blackaller, race deck spinnaker run finish. Knowing the last race of the season was up, the J105 fleet got off under a Black Flag after 2 generals and an i flag. The Fleet worked its way to Yellow Bluff only to be rolled by the Farr 40s on the mark rounding and reach to the StFYC.

Winning bullets in the BBS were Good Timin' (race 1,3 and 6), Blackhawk (race 5 & 7), Irrational Again in race 4 and Arbitrage in race 2. Other good showings were put in by Irrational Again for overall 5th, Zuni Bear's 2,3,3,4,5, Nantucket's steady 2,4,4,5,5,8, Walloping Swede with a 5 top tens and a 3 on Sunday, Charade iwth a 2,3,4,4, Tiburon with 5 top tens, Jabberwocky with a pair of 8s, Bandwidth with a 6,8, Orion iwth a 6, Bella Rosa with a 7,7,9, Natural blonde with a 6, Jose Cuervo with a 8,9,11, Horse Play moving up to a 17 overall, Hazardous Waste with a 6, and Juxtapose with a 21,23. Congratulations to all who competed and we all look forward to next season.
