Hospice Cup Results, May 25th and 26th
The 2002 Hospice Regatta was held in 25-30 Knots of wind. The first race started off TI to accomodate the IACC and Master Mariners. Lots of fleets resulted in lots of traffic on the course as J120s, J35s, Express 27s and Knarrs joined the J105s for 2 days of racing off the City Front. A flood tide and a port rounding meant boats coming off the city front had to round back around port on a button hook while dodging the boats that were rounding down to leeward. Good Timin' won the series with a 1,1,3,7 12 to nip Charade's 1,2,4,6 13 and thus took the season lead from Bella Rosa who finished 7th at 3,5,6,21 35. Good Timin' now leads Bella Rosa by 3 points for the season. Good Timin' won 2 races, Charade 1 and Blackhawk 1. Good Timin overcame an OCS call that was reversed to get a 3 in race 2 that ultimately saved their bacon. Zuni Bear raced a fine regatta and would have won the event except for a DSQ in the last race due to going inside restricted mark B. Blackhawk horizoned the fleet in race 2 and generally sailed very fast and moved up in the season standings to 4th only 3 points behind Zuni Bear. Nantucket Sleighride came back strong on Day 2 to get a 2,3 to grab 4th while defending Hospice Champ Jitterbug made a rare appearance and grabbed fifth.
Tiburon sailed a steady 7,8,8,8 31 to grab 6th while Bella Rosa had to settle for 7th at 35 after going deep in race 2 due to a Spinnaker / Jib gordian knot. Whisper showed up in the top ten with a 6,8,11,11 36 and moved up from 18th to11th in the season standings. Zuni Bear fell from 1st to 9th with 40 points with Jose Cuervo finsihing 10th with 44 points and moved up to 12th in the seaon standings from 15th.
Other boats moving up in the fleet included Hazardous Waste (20th to 16th), Larrikin (22d to 20th), Charade (34th to 24th), Alchemy (30th to 28th) and part timer Jitterbug (43d to 32d). There were only a few protests and no major damage reported on a blustery weekend that saw gusts to 30 Knots and downwind runs into the high teens! The fleet now gears up for the PCCs on June 8-9. Weigh in required.
